Future Transportation Concept

During the project I conducted user research on public transportation with the goal of creating the seating layout for an entirely new means of transportation between Uppsala and Arlanda Airport.

This is the resulting seating layout for the available 12 square meter of space in the vehicle. Bent wood panels, space for accessibility, power outlets and cabin luggage storage under the panels are some of the details shown here.

This shows the layout from the top. Note that wheelchair users (in the right bottom corner) are travelling in the same direction as others with plenty of space to move around and that one of the seats in the bottom is extra wide and provides support handles to accommodate needs of elderly or pregnant.

Apart from space for luggage, a lot of aspects were considered for the layout design. This picture shows some of these, like the placement of the emergency phone, first aid kit and surveillance cameras.

This detailed image shows the elevated armrest/table under which smaller luggage can be placed. The armrest is also an enabler for personal space, which was something that was stated as important during research.

These are some of the problematic, and important, areas concluded from a survey I did about public transportation. For instance, users of public transportation complained about environmental factors, such as temperature, and safety aspects, such as behavior of other passengers. The respondents of the survey also highligthed needs for comfort and experiences, such as on-board entertainment and internet. This all depended on the distance of travel.

I also conducted studies on board of airport buses to better understand the experience of traveling to the airport for different types of travelers. Findings include for instance the importance of having luggage easily available close to you and the need for information about connecting public transportation.

I used a number of methods for user research throughout this project. This image shows a method called "Staging". Users in this method simulated how they wanted their future traveling experience to be by means of changing the layout of chairs and placement of luggage and other belongings.
